To Mars, Via Russia? Following up on my post from the other day about the ISS crew situation, I found out that the longest anyone has ever spent continuously in orbit is the 437-day record of cosmonaut Valery Polyakov, who spent the time onboard Mir. At the end of his flight, Polyakov was able to walk out of the landing capsule by himself. And while I still have not found a definitive answer as to why radiation exposure levels on ISS are more significant than anticipated, I did find that Mir orbited at an altitude of about 155 miles, about two-thirds of the altitude of ISS.
