Ticket to Mars? Pay For It With PayPal! I had heard of SpaceX, a new entrant in the launch vehicle business, but didn't realize that it was started by the former brains behind PayPal. Now, he's taken the money from the sale of PayPal to eBay and started his own rocket company. The commercial launch business is not the necessarily the best one somebody could get into right now, having run into a huge slump, but Elon Musk believes he can be competitive by offering launch costs at a third of what's available now. His dream, however, is to leverage commercial launch profits into the creation of a more-powerful launch vehicle to be used for a robotic mission to Mars, aimed at stirring up public interest in manned exploration of the Red Planet. A nice idea, to be sure, but what exactly he would do to stir up more interest than the three Mars rovers launching this year, I have not heard. Wired has an article with more info.
