The Future Of The Shuttle?
Per GOVEXEC.com: Marked for death in 2010, the troubled space shuttle could find new life as a rocket to the moon and Mars. Long after the winged orbiter completes its last mission, its external fuel tank and twin solid-fuel boosters could continue flying. Strategists in government and industry hope to convince NASA's new Office of Exploration Systems that vehicles derived from the shuttle offer the least risky and most practical transportation for future explorers.
